CutIt Version 1.0
Copyright (c) Andre Nancoz 1993
An OS/2 2.1 PM application for quickly saving information under various
categories. When reading documents, E-Mail, etc. any information which you
place into the OS/2 clipboard can, with a double click, be placed into another
file. A small window contains a list of categories. The contents of the
clipboard will be appended to the category that is double clicked on, or you
can click on the paste button which will also paste to the currently selected
category. Each paste operation is preceded by a separator which you specify
via option settings. After a paste is performed the window which was active
prior to the paste is re-activated, this is an option which is on by default.
Another push button will start your favorite editor or lister with the
currently selected category's file. The option is set to e.exe by default.
The main window is resizable and the category list will grow and shrink with
the size of the window. The size and position of the window is remembered from
the last shutdown. The position of the update and options windows are also
remembered.
In order to minimize screen real estate, a seperate window is used for adding,
updating, and deleting categories. A 3rd window is used for setting a number
of options. Only the main window needs to be open during normal operations.
At present the available options are; main window caption, view or editor
program, separator line for paste operations, file disposition when deleting
categories, an option to show the beginning of the pasted text on a status line
in the main window (this increases the size of the main window by 1 line), and
an option to return to the previously active window after a paste operation.
Each window has on-line help available by pressing F1 when it is active.
This program was written for OS/2 2.1 with WATCOM's VX-REXX V1.01c development
system, it requires the VROBJ.DLL to be in a directory pointed to by the
LIBPATH statement in config.sys.
Installation
The install.cmd procedure supplied makes NO modifications to config.sys,
os2ini.sys or os2sys.ini. Install will by default create a directory off your
OS/2 install root with the name of CutIt. You can change the location and name
in 2 ways; 1) execute install with a parameter of the drive and name of your
choice, i.e install x:\mycat, 2) execute install without a parameter and change
the drive and directory when asked the following question:
Press <Enter> to accept, <Ctrl-C><Enter> to cancel or type a new directory path
CutIt install will either add to an existing directory or create a new one. A
program referance object will be created on your desktop with the working
directory pointing to the install directory.
Operation
Whenever CutIt is executed it looks in the current directory for an .ini file
with the name of cutit.ini. (You can override this by placing any other file
specification in the parameter field of the notebooks 1st page.) If the .ini
file does not exist a default one is created and the "options" window is
opened automatically. Whenever an .ini is opened that does not contain any
categories the "update" window is automatically opened, otherwise only the
main category list is opened.
If you want the category files stored elsewhere either change the working
directory or add a full path and .ini file name to the parameter entry of the
notebook. If you use the parameter line the working directory will be changed
to the one in the parameter line. All category files are created in the same
directory as the .ini file unless specifically directed elsewhere. If you
wish, a category can be created and pointed to any path and file that is
accessable at the time of the categories creation. You may also change the
file that a category uses at any time via the "update" function. When a new
category is defined ("Update" on the menu bar) a file will be created to hold
the "pastes" if it doesn't already exist. Category files are always appended
to so that you may point to an existing file without losing data. If you do
not supply a file name when creating a category one will be made for you. This
name will consist of the 1st 5 alpha=numeric characters of the category name
followed by a 3 digit number starting at 001, (if an identically named file is
found the 001 will be incremented).
The "file" item on the menu bar can be used to change to a different .ini file
after the program has been started. This allows you to maintain seperate
category lists and switch between them without restarting the program.
Don't forget to use F! for additional help in each of the windows.
Possible Future Enhancements
1. Option to clear the clipboard whenever a paste occurs.
2. Option to not paste the separators if the clipboard is empty.
3. Option to change and/or turn off sound.
4. Add a comment button to the main window for entry of line(s) to a category.
(1 or more? Let me know. Immediately paste the separator and/or clipboard
afterwards?)
5. Allow for certain options to be applied to only specified categories.
Which options, how would you like to see it implemented?
Now the pitch
You knew it was coming. This is a shareware program, the registration fee is
$10.00 USA. I haven't included any nags but future enhancements will depend
on registrations. Suggestions for improvements are welcome whether from the
above list or others I haven't thought of. I will certainly give more weight
to suggestions from registered users.
